“Sorry about dinner,” Olivia said, gesturing down at the shriveled and singed meal before them. “I guess a whole new me doesn’t include cooking skills.” Jonathan laughed, and Olivia felt her heart lift a little.

“No worries,” he said. “My mum always taught me that if someone cooks for you, it’s the most delicious meal in the world.”

“’Mum’,” mused Olivia, “In America, we say ‘mom’. Was she a good cook?”

“Absolutely not, why do you think she taught me that?” Jonathan retorted, and Olivia laughed. She poured them both another glass of wine.

“This should help the burned-I mean extra-crispy parts settle a little better,” she said. Jonathan chuckled again and raised his glass to her. They sat for a few minutes in comfortable silence, their gazes drifting around the dining room.

“Looking good, isn’t it?” Jonathan said.

“Yeah,” Olivia admitted. “And it’s all thanks to you. I can’t say enough how much I appreciate your help.”

“It hasn’t exactly been a chore,” Jonathan said, swirling his wine slowly. “I have to admit, this is the most that I’ve enjoyed myself in… well, quite a while.” Olivia sat silently, waiting for him to say more. Jonathan just shook his head and smiled again. “Listen to us, jabbering on at this hour. We need to get to bed, tomorrow’s another day, and I swear I’m going to re-level those steps even if it kills me!” Jonathan stood up, bade Olivia goodnight, and left her to her whirling emotions. She barely remembered to put out food for the cat before going to bed.
